- INFORMATION ABOUT THE POSITION
- Position: PhD student
- Researcher Profile: First Stage Researcher (R1- up to the point of PhD)
- Number of vacancies: 1
- Project: ReadCalibration ERC project
- Organisation/Company: BCBL Basque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language
- Location: Spain > San Sebastian
- Research Field: Neuroscience > Cognition and Language > Phonetics / Phonology / Acoustics
- Type of contract/Duration of Contract : Temporary = 4 years
- Job Status: Full-time
- Hours per week: 35
- Starting date: Between May 1st and October 1st 2022
- Application deadline: March 13th 2022
Information about the project: The main aim of the ReadCalibration ERC project is to explore the interplay between phonology and orthography in speech perception and production in various populations (children and adults; typically-developing or with reading and/or hearing impairments; monolinguals and bilinguals).
Job description: The selected candidate will work in the context of the 5-year ERC project Phonemic representations in speech perception and production: Recalibration by reading acquisition (ReadCalibration). He/she will be developing studies exploring phonemic recalibration in hearing impaired populations.
The candidate will be responsible for leading his/her own research projects from beginning to end, under supervision: developing research ideas, designing and running experiments, analyzing data, reporting results by writing up research papers and presenting at international conferences. The candidate will be encouraged to collaborate with researchers at the BCBL at all stages of their career (predoctoral students, postdoctoral fellows, and established researchers) by taking part in weekly group and lab meetings, seminars of external speakers, specific interest groups, etc. The core of the project will rely on behavioral tasks and measures, with fine-grained analysis of language production and perception (e.g., acoustic analysis). If desired, the candidate could also develop neuroimaging experiments as part of the ERC project, taking advantage of neuroimaging facilities at the BCBL (e.g., EEG, eye-tracking, MEG, fMRI).
PI and research group: The candidate will join the Speech and Bilingualism group led by Dr. Clara Martin (c.martin@bcbl.eu). The research group focuses on exploring factors impacting speech production and perception in L1 and L2, including contextual properties (e.g., foreign accentedness of the speaker/addressee). We recently started the large-scale ReadCalibration ERC project investigating the impact of the orthographic system on speech sound and word perception and production across modalities (listening, reading, speaking, typing), languages (opaque and transparent orthographies), and populations (monolinguals and bilinguals with varying reading skills).
- CANDIDATES’ PROFILE AND SELECTION CRITERIA
