To blog or not to blog...
Every so often I look at the hit counts for Talking Brains to see if it is worth continuing to post. If no one is looking, there's no point in posting. With over 3500 hits for the last month -- and probably at least some of these were on purpose -- I suppose it is worth continuing...

Geez! That is a lot of hits for September. Big pressure, Greg, to keep the number high for October :-) We better come up with some major stuff.
How about we deconstruct this gem from Sarah Palin:

Sweet. And I thought I was failing at my piano lessons because of the rain ...
I'm assuming that I'm speaking for many of the lurkers on this blog and just want to say, good stuff! Please keep it going.
I am a lurker too, and I think it's fairly likely that you're getting better exposure here than you would in most (if not any scientific journal). So if that is your primary motive, continue!
Although effective marketing of one's research is probably just as important as doing the science itself -- after all, even if you are a great scientist, it doesn't matter if no one pays attention -- self-promotion isn't the only motive or the only reason to continue blogging. For example, early on I encouraged people to send in summaries of their own recent publications that we would post as "From the lab of..." entries. No takers. We were hoping for informal, in depth, community discussion. The little that we get is really fun and useful, and always hope to get more in the future.
I really like the set-up here. I find your general approach very thought provoking, and you've brought plenty of interesting papers to our attention that many of us would probably have missed. I'm a fan of your and David's work, though I don't always agree with your conclusions, so it's great to see your ideas expressed informally. Here's to 5K by the end of the year!
